FORECAST IN DETAIL

After last week, the showers today shouldn’t raise an eyebrow. However, they are just the opening act as strong winds and much cooler conditions surge into the area. Lows should reach levels that haven’t been seen in these parts since early May. Start searching for that jacket now because you will need it Friday morning. The weekend will be very fall-like with readings more typical of mid-October. It should be a dry one but showers are likely to lurk not far to our south so it is a bit tricky.

Today (Thursday): The morning should start out dandy with readings near 70 and we might eke out an hour or two of partial sunshine. However, the clouds race in and showers and even a thundershower are possible by midday (70% chance). Amounts are not likely to be more than a quarter of an inch so no need to stack the sandbags. Winds which come from the southwest in the morning pivot to out of the north and build to 10-20 mph. Highs get no farther than the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Showers should be over and done with early and skies should clear before midnight. Winds are still strong from the north as colder air pile drives into the area. Readings quickly fall from the 60s to 50s in the evening. Overnight lows are eye-opening, reaching the upper 40s to lower 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Friday): The sun is back in full force but you are forgiven if you think its batteries are in need of a charge. The cold air continues to surge across the area and highs struggle to make the upper 60s. It would actually be quite comfortable by afternoon if the brisk winds from the north would just let up. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: The winds finally abate but this could be a trap. If clouds do not increase as expected temperatures could drop even lower than expected (low-to-mid 40s). However, with the expected blanket, lows should hold in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday: is likely to end up all over the place with periods of clouds and a fair amount of mostly sunny breaks as well; the infamous variable clouds kind of day. The heart of the high pressure is over us and this holds down temperatures but does finally give us a calm day. Highs range through the 60s with some of the cooler readings possible in the south, where clouds are most prevalent. The evening should remain in the 60s. Lows should end up in the low-to-mid 50s. Confidence: Low-Medium

Sunday is delightful. Mostly sunny skies are a much safer bet and the high pressure is weakening. This allow temperatures to climb a bit and highs should be in the low-to-mid-70s. Overnight lows range from the mid-to-upper 50s. Confidence: Medium

Monday is even better, especially if you don’t have to work! Mostly sunny skies, dry air and calm winds. Highs hold in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium
