FORECAST IN DETAIL

Yesterday’s blah (30s/clouds/fog) gives way to a warm surge by later this morning and especially this afternoon. Highs in the 50s and the special guest “star” appearance of our sun will make for a nice afternoon of drying. I must stress the importance of enjoying today, because tomorrow finds another cloud canopy creeping in to cover our area in the afternoon as rain returns for Thursday into early Friday. Colder weather arrives this weekend, especially on Sunday, with maybe a few flurries?

Snow Potential Index: 2 (→) - Possibilities of some flakes either Saturday morning or again on Sunday with a Polar cold front.

Today (Tuesday): Fog and clouds could linger through the rush hour into the mid-morning period, but we expect a big arrival of sunshine by late morning into especially the afternoon. Highs break out into the mid-50s with breezes from the west and northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Dropping dewpoints and breezy conditions collaborate to dry up those muddy spots and puddles. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Mostly clear overnight with light winds. Lows drop into the mid-to-upper 20s in the outer suburbs, but hold in the low-to-mid 30s in the city. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): We could see some sun in the morning before clouds gradually take position over our heads during the afternooon. Increased cloudiness and a slightly cooler air mass hold our temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s instead. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Cloudy skies with lows in the 30s. ^here is a slight chance of a shower or light rain toward morning (just 20%). Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday is frought with cloud cover and light rain, mostly in the afternoon. Highs in the low-to-mid 40s could inch up a few more degrees if we stay drier a bit longer. More rain Thursday night with lows about steady or slightly cooler in the 40s. Confidence: Medium

Friday remains wet in the morning to maybe midday. The cold front arrives in the morning, and it could be accompanied by some moderate to heavy rain (in case you’re curious, January is running just about a half inch drier than normal, so we’re actually playing catch-up). Morning temperatures in the 40s could pop into the low-to-mid 50s in the afternoon. Some clouds linger Friday night with lows in the 30s. Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend is a bit complicated as Saturday could see a secondary low on the cold front traveling close enough to our area in the morning to offer precipitation. We even have an outside chance to have enough cold air in place to see mix precipitation. Right now, the guidance is divided and the more realistic scenario is that the system stays far enough away to keep us in partly cloudy skies with highs in the colder 40s. Saturday night should be clear to mostly clear with lows in the 20s to low 30s. Sunday sends in a second stronger cold front that whips up our winds, holds our temperatures down (30s with colder wind chills), and potentially generates some flurries and snow showers. Confidence: Low
