FORECAST IN DETAIL

Yesterday morning’s near-freezing temperatures were a nice change of pace. But we all know the story by now - cold air just can’t seem to hang around for very long in March 2012. So while we’re still kind of cool this morning, by afternoon we’re looking at temperatures into the 70s and the potential for some showers or t’storms. Highs take a step back tomorrow and Friday before warming a bit this weekend as we transition to a new month, and what looks to be a new weather pattern with temperatures closer to normal.

Today (Wednesday): It’s a cool morning but still several degrees warmer than yesterday’s chilly start. The warmer start combines with partly sunny skies and mild 15-20 mph breezes from the southwest to push afternoon temps into the 70s. Throw in an approaching cold front and we have ourselves a 30-40% chance of afternoon/evening showers or t’storms. Any storms that develop could produce damaging winds. Best guess for highs is mid-70s, but showers arriving earlier in the afternoon could cap them in the low 70s, while later-arriving showers and more sun could mean upper 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: That 40% chance of showers/storms continues into the evening, but by mid-to-late evening the cold front should be through and starting to head off to the east, putting an end to any showers or storms. As drier air filters in overnight, we hold on to enough of a breeze to keep the atmosphere well mixed, and thus temperatures from dropping too far. Lows bottom from near 50 to the mid-50s under partly cloudy skies. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Thursday): Our winds pick up again tomorrow. But this time their from a chilly northwest direction, and quite brisk at 15-25 mph with gusts near 35 mph. The result is afternoon highs that are only about 10-15 degrees above morning lows, though that still puts us at near 60 to the low 60s. Not too bad especially with partly sunny skies, but again those winds do add a chill. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Winds diminish and skies go mostly clear - perfect conditions for plummeting temperatures. Lows sink to the mid-30s in the coldest suburbs to low 40s downtown. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Plenty of sun for at least a good part of the day should help Friday highs back to the low-to-mid 60s. Eventually low pressure approaching form the Midwest probably brings increasing clouds in the afternoon or toward evening, and a chance of showers by evening or overnight, with Friday night lows near 50 to the low 50s. Confidence: Medium

As far as the weekend goes, Saturday appears to offer a better chance of showers than Sunday as low pressure treks through the area, though another system may try to throw a few showers our way later Sunday. Then again, neither system looks to have a ton of moisture with it, so rain is far from a sure bet either day. Highs remain above average in the 60s to near 70. Confidence: Low-Medium
