FORECAST IN DETAIL

Save some clouds and an isolated late day shower today, the weeks gets off to a promising start. And Tuesday will generate few complaints with mild sunshine. But Wednesday into Thursday, while it’s mild, we transition to an unsettled and ultimately cold weather pattern. The chilliest weather since the beginning of the month arrives Friday through Sunday.

Today (Monday): Skies are variably cloudy with some intervals of sunshine. Late in the day a cold front moves through, and so I can’t rule out a few sprinkles or a shower (20-30% chance), with the best chance towards the mountains. Highs range from 65-70. Winds are from the southwest at around 10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly to mostly cloudy skies early gradually clear and it’s seasonably cool. Lows range from near 40 in the cooler suburbs to the upper 40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Keep reading for the forecast through the midweek...

Tomorrow (Tuesday): In all likelihood, this is the week’s nicest day. High pressure overhead delivers ample sunshine, and highs reach the mid-to-upper 60s. Winds from west and northwest are fairly light, at around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Skies are mainly clear early, but some high cloud cover may increase after midnight. Lows range from the low-to-mid 40s in the cooler suburbs to the low 50s downtown. Calm winds early come in from the south at around 5-10 mph late. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

One more mild day Wednesday, as winds from the south (10-15 mph) push temps up to near 70 ahead of a cold front. Skies become partly to mostly cloudy, but much of the day may well be rain free. We run a 20-30% chance of showers by evening. The cold front takes its time advancing closer to the region Wednesday night, so it remains mild, with a 30-40% chance of showers. Lows are in the 50s. Confidence: Medium

The cold front finally pushes through the region during the day Thursday, probably late. Depending on its exact timing, temperatures may make another run into the 60s or we hold in the 50s (with an earlier cold front passage). I’m favoring the slower, milder scenario. Cloudy skies (though maybe some breaks in the morning) and rain showers are a decent bet, mainly in the afternoon and towards the evening. Partial clearing Thursday night, with lows in the 40s. Confidence: Low-Medium

Friday’s forecast may well be the week’s toughest. Cold high pressure will try to move into the region, but low pressure may also try to form along the tail end of the cold front stalled to our south and southeast. If the low forms and tracks close enough to us we may have some cold rain, with steady temperatures in the 40s. On the other hand, if the low is weak and/or far enough south, we’ll have partly sunny, chilly conditions with highs 50-55. Clearing and cold Friday night, with lows from the mid-30s in the colder suburbs to near 40 downtown. Confidence: Low-Medium

It does look like the weekend should be settled, albeit chilly. Saturday is probably the colder and cloudier of the two days, with highs 49-54. Sunday sees more sunshine, with highs in the mid-50s. Saturday night might bring frost to suburban and outlying regions with lows from the low 30s to the upper 30s downtown. Confidence: Low-Medium
