Inauguration Weather: How Cold Was It?

Wx and the City

* Winter Returns Tomorrow: Full Forecast | Later: Inauguration Contrails *

Being outdoors for long hours in cold temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills on Inauguration Day led to some strange, random, and out-of-the-ordinary behaviors one normally wouldn't see in public in D.C. How cold was it? I surveyed a few Inauguration attendees, and here's what they said.

It was so cold...

...the lawyers had their hands in their own pockets.

...I did team jumping jacks with a dozen strangers just to stay warm.

...I had one foot warmer and two hand-warmers in each shoe, leading to foot cramps later in the day.

...the sea gulls wouldn't stop flying so they wouldn't freeze.

...people were going into the port-o-potties just to keep warm.

...I was happy to be crammed tightly in a crowd of a million people -- it blocked the wind!

...people who had traveled here from Florida turned around and boarded the bus back to Florida.

...I carried pants in my purse in case I needed another layer.

...I stopped into a bar to get a break from the cold, and didn't leave.

...I poured vodka on myself and called it a martini.

...I hugged random strangers just to keep warm.

How cold was it for you? What behaviors did you observe, and what did you do to stay warm?
