Parts of Romania overwhelmed by deep snow, villages stranded (PHOTOS AND VIDEO)

The deepest snows in recent memory have buried parts of Romania under 13 to 16 feet (4-5 meters). The snow has reached the roofs of houses in some villages.

The Associated Press reports military planes delivered food to towns and villages today where thousands have been stranded by the crippling snow amounts.

“Authorities declared an alert Monday in eastern Romania, where 6,000 people have been cut off for days. About a dozen major roads were closed, 300 trains canceled and more than 1,000 schools shut down,” the AP reported.
