2:50 p.m. update: Much of the area has gone to all snow or a mix of sleet and snow. Far north and west, a heavy band of snow with rates of probably 1-2”/hr plus has set up over western Loudoun and western Frederick counties. For most of the area, until you get to northern Montgomery County, western Fairfax County and points north and west, the snow is mostly of the conversational variety with little to no accumulation on roadways expected before precipitation begins to taper around 4-5 p.m.
From 1:25 p.m.: Despite snow and sleet in the area, including accumulations of such well north and west of the District (an incredible 9”+ in Frostburg, Md.), the biggest shock to the system for most in the close-in metro area may be temperatures. Here, still two days out from Halloween, we’ve seen temperatures at the surface mostly in the mid-30s to near 40 from D.C. to the north and west, into the low 40s south and east.
Higher up in the atmosphere, colder air has been working in from the west and northwest, and continues to turn rain into mixed precipitation (various combinations of rain, sleet and snow) from northwest to southeast, with reports of all snow once you get to northern Montgomery County, western Fairfax County and points north and west. Sleet has been reported at least as far south and east as Alexandria and Greenbelt, with snowflakes seen in NW DC.
Snow totals based on user reports:
3-5” near Winchester
1-2” New Market/Frederick
