Storming the Manassas Battlefield Park, Saturday, September 8

A thunderstorm moves into the Manassas Battlefield Park.

The Manassas Battlefield Park is an excellent location to watch the weather because of its open, rolling terrain. On Saturday, September 8, I made a trip to the battlefield and recorded a line of storms moving into the area with video. The video of the clouds are in time lapse and show the storm’s gust front approaching. The video of the rain and wind is in real time.

While I was filming the weather, a group of National Guardsmen were having a re-enlistment and promotions ceremony by the statue of Stonewall Jackson. The ceremony was hurried along as the wind and rain intensified. One officer took cover in the visitor’s center and remarked, “I wonder if this will set the tone for the next three to six years?” In hindsight, it may have been more interesting to film the ceremony in the storm.
