Scattered thunderstorms have swept through the area this afternoon, some of which have been severe, particularly north of the District. Earlier storms knocked down trees and powerlines in both Montgomery (around Germantown and Poolesville) and Anne Arundel (north of Annapolis) counties, according to the National Weather Service. Hail, as large as 0.75" in diameter, was also reported in Anne Arundel county.
A second line of storms is now moving inside the beltway and will produce very heavy rains and gusty winds as it marches eastward through the District and then the eastern suburbs in the next hour. This line of storms will probably be less intense than the initial line north of the District and more intense south and southeast of the District. In Charles County, Md., hail between 0.75"-1.25" was reported around Port Tobacco and La Plata along with some downed tree branches.
