Forecast track for tropical storm Chris.
(National Hurricane Center)
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has given a name - Chris - to the low pressure system positioned some 560 miles south-southwest of the Canadian Maritimes. The storm - marginally tropical - has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. It is neither a threat to land nor expected to appreciably strengthen in the coming days.
Its only distinction is its association with an active start to the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. NHC director Dr. Rick Knabb tweeted: “Only twice before on record (1887,1959) has 3rd Atlantic storm formed earlier than this date”
