What are these faint dots in a sea of black?

Skywatching has intrigued humanity through the ages. Whether viewing with the naked eye, Earth-based telescopes, or indirectly from space platforms (especially the Hubble Telescope) the nighttime sky continues to evoke wonder. And it provides the beginnings of understanding of our place in the vastness of the universe (or universes?).
