What's the average date of D.C.'s first snow?

* Sunny, but breezy: Full Forecast | 2010-2011 Winter Outlook *

On Saturday, CWG reader @josh28 posed the following question:

I can't find this online anywhere, so I'll ask it here - what's the average first date of snow in DC?

The answer: Between 1971-2000, the average date of the first 0.1" of snow was December 13 and December 28 for the first inch.

Where could you find this information? Go to the National Weather Service's NOWDATA link for D.C./Baltimore and then:

1) Under Products, select First/last dates
2) Select Location (Washington area)
3) Select Variable(s) (Snowfall >=0.1" and Snowfall >=1")
4) Select Year (1971-2000)
