A potent cold front that swept through the South Monday triggered thunderstorms that unleashed severe weather in several states. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) logged 217 severe wind and 159 large hail reports, concentrated in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Two tornadoes reportedly touched down in Tennessee.
The storms knocked out power to tens of thousands of people and hail to the size of baseballs (3 inches in diameter) was reported in Alabama. The hail was not only large, but also deep in some locations, as evident in this YouTube video, from Hogansville, Georgia.
The same storm system brought the period of light snow, followed by cold, steady rain to the Washington, D.C. area
Today, it’s blanketing New England with snow. Boston is under a winter storm warning through 1 p.m., with totals generally in the 6-10 inch range.
“With this snowstorm and the March 7-8 storm that brought 10.5 inches, Boston has more than doubled their normal March total of 7.8 inches,” tweeted AccuWeather.
