The National Weather Service has confirmed a second tornado occurred in the Washington, D.C. region Friday evening. In addition to the twister that caused minor damage in Fredericksburg, a tornado damaged 3 homes and uprooted trees in Prince George’s county, 3 miles south-southeast of Largo.

The tornado – estimated to be 75 yards wide – was only on the ground a half mile and lasted less than a minute, at 7:26 p.m. It was relatively weak, rated an EF-0 (the lowest classification on the 0-5 Enhanced Fujita scale) with peak winds of 85 mph.

Like the Fredericksburg storm, no tornado warning was issued for the affected area, although a tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning were in effect. Prior to the touchdown, a tornado warning had been issued at 7:07 p.m. for northern Charles and southwest Prince George’s counties until 7:30 p.m., but it was cancelled at 7:18 p.m. and not extended to the northeast.

Here’s the detailed storm survey report from the NWS:

AT 7:26 PM A BRIEF EF-0 TORNADO WITH PEAK WINDS OF 85 MPH TOUCHED DOWN IN PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY IN THE MARLBORO RIDGE SUBDIVISION OFF RITCHIE MARLBORO ROAD. THE TORNADO UPROOTED AND SNAPPED SEVERAL TREES. IT ALSO DAMAGED THREE HOMES…BLOWING OUT WINDOWS AND GARAGE DOORS. ONE HOME HAD A SIDE WALL OF THE GARAGE BLOWN OUT WHEN WIND ENTERED THE GARAGE THROUGH THE DAMAGED DOOR. SEVERAL OTHER HOMES ON BOTH SIDES OF RITCHIE MARLBORO ROAD HAD MINOR SIDING AND SHINGLE DAMAGE. THE TORNADO TRAVELLED A HALF MILE BEFORE LIFTING AND LASTED LESS THAN A MINUTE.
