Mother Nature throws a bone to warm-weather fans today with temperatures rising past the 70-degree mark. Then she snatches it right back with a cold front that threatens some showers and thunderstorms toward or during the evening, and ushers in cooler but sunny weather for the remainder of the work week. As for the weekend, well it’s looking nice for now, but the forecast may still need some fine-tuning.

Today (Wednesday): Partly sunny skies and a mild breeze from the south, increasing to 10-20 mph with some higher afternoon gusts, push temperatures into above-average territory today. Afternoon highs likely reach the mid-to-upper 70s. The warmth arrives in advance of a cold front, which threatens a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly after 6 p.m. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: The 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms remains through around midnight. The potential line of showers and storms may be broken rather than solid, or may diminish as it moves through from west to east. So some spots could see a hefty downpour and gusty winds while others may not see much of anything. Once the front passes by, winds turn breezy from the northwest and clearing skies try to work in toward dawn as lows dip to the mid-40s to near 50. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): Tomorrow is cooler for sure, especially to start as morning readings rise into and through the 50s. But it looks like a nice day nonetheless with partly to mostly sunny skies, light winds and highs in the low-to-mid 60s, with just a slight chance of a shower. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear and cool with lows near 40 to the mid-40s (suburbs to city). Not frigid by any means, but this may be the coolest night we see until fall. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

With high pressure firmly in control Friday and Friday night, we can expect mostly clear skies and light winds. Friday highs should climb to the mid-to-upper 60s, followed by Friday night lows mainly in the 40s, maybe up near 50 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Models are trending toward nicer weather for the weekend, but there’s still some uncertainty with low pressure trying to develop to our southwest. For now we’ll lean toward high pressure (centered off the mid-Atlantic/Northeast coast) winning out, which would translate to partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-60s to low 70s. But cloudier skies with a bit cooler temperatures and scattered showers late Saturday and Sunday aren’t out of the question if the low pressure gains some momentum. Confidence: Low-Medium
