Winter refuses to go down without a fight in both North America and Europe. Following spells of cold and snow over the central U.S. last week, a blanket of snow fell in parts of Spain over the weekend into Monday.

“In some areas temperatures were low enough to produce significant snowfall, with the Asturias region in the north being particularly badly affected,” reports Al Jazeera. “A snow depth of 18cm was reported at the ski resort of Navacerrada, in the Sistema Central mountains, northwest of Madrid.”

The wintry weather in April’s last days resulted from the arrival of low pressure from the Mediterranean.  A large area of cold high pressure to the northwest helped to funnel cold air into the region as the low pressure system moved in.  Temperatures were over 20 degrees below normal in some locations.
