FORECAST IN DETAIL

Temperature Map

After a chilly morning, the temperature recovery begins today with warmer upper 60s. Then the mercury just soars tomorrow with 80s back in the picture as our cool high pressure powerhouse moves offshore. We have some varying daily risks of showers or storms starting tomorrow as weather systems race by the area. But the incoming slightly warmer-than-normal weather holds into the upcoming weekend.

Today (Tuesday): A crisp autumn late spring morning greets us with some freeze/frost concerns in the far western suburbs. Partly to maybe mostly sunny skies in the morning give way to some instability cloud cover midday into afternoon (outside risk of a sprinkle too).  Temperatures rise into the mid-to-upper 60s with light breezes from the northwest and then west late in the day at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Becoming mostly cloudy overnight with a wider divergence in low temperatures.  Some outer areas could dip down toward the middle 40s (not as chilly as last few nights there), while the city itself holds up in the low-to-mid 50s.  Light winds again. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A warm front delivers bigger changes today, but it could also drop some morning light showers around the area.  A mostly cloudy morning transitions to a partly sunny afternoon as temperatures skyrocket to the upper 70s and low 80s thanks to winds from the southwest that increase to 10-15 mph.  We also have a late afternoon to evening 30 percent risk of scattered showers or a stray storm, mainly to the north of our area. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and much warmer.  Lows in the low-to-mid 60s match the highs from Monday with light winds.  Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday feels a bit more humid with partly cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of mainly afternoon/evening showers and storms.  Highs are again in the warm, but not hot, low-to-mid 80s.  Thursday night could see some scattered showers/storms early especially in the southern part of the area, but then partly cloudy skies overnight as some slightly cooler and drier air returns.  Lows dip into the 50s in the suburbs to around 60 in the city.  Confidence: Medium

Friday is only slightly cooler, but we should see lower dew points (less humidity) as a weather system shifts to our south to allow a little bit of high pressure to wedge into the region.  Highs should range from the upper 70s to near 80.  Friday night offers up a few clouds with lows ranging through the 50s. Confidence: Medium

The weekend is a bit tricky right now on the precipitation side.  Temperatures should be up around 80 each day with partly sunny conditions for the most part.  Lows should mostly be in the 60s.  But there is a 30-40 percent chance of showers/storms each day, and much will depend on the status of a weather system stalled to our south.  Some guidance keeps it there, which means a drier, less humid high near 80, while other indications inch the weather system into the area with a bit more humidity and the shower threat.  We will have to get closer to the weekend to get a better handle on this challenge. Confidence: Low
