Clouds take control this weekend, but all may not be lost. While the risk of an occasional shower is with us pretty much right through Saturday and Sunday, I think a good part of both days may end up dry. As for temperatures, well they are certainly on the cool side of normal, but that’s not so cold as we get into the latter part of May here. Warmer air does make a comeback early in the work week as we trend toward a more summery pattern.

Today (Saturday): An onshore flow from the southeast spells a mostly cloudy and cooler day with highs stalling in the upper 60s to low 70s. Showers are not a sure bet but there may be some around at times, with chances ranging from 30% for D.C. and points north, to about 50% for the southern suburbs. Breezes are light, from the southeast around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Any full-fledged showers should be limited during the evening and overnight, but we’ll keep a 20% chance of one in the forecast just in case, and we may see mist or fog develop. Continued cloudy skies serve to keep our diurnal temperature swing rather small, with lows only down to the upper 50s to low 60s . Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Sunday): That same flow from the southeast, or perhaps more from the east, keeps us cloudy and on the cool side with highs topping out near 70 to the low 70s. An occasional shower is possible (40-50% chance) but much of the day may end up dry. Winds remain on the light side, around 10 mph from the east or southeast. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tomorrow night: Mostly cloudy skies persist with a 30% chance of a shower and fairly mild lows from near 60 to the mid-60s (suburbs to city). Some mist or fog is possible as well. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

The flow turns more from the south on Monday and from the southwest on Tuesday. That means partly sunny skies and increasingly warmer temperatures with Monday highs near 80 and a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, and Tuesday highs in the 80s with a 20% chance of a shower or storm. Confidence: Medium
