Crazy sky puts on show at Boston’s Fenway Park during turbulent game

There was drama abound in Beantown Monday evening.

Everyone’s talking about the blown call that helped the Rays of Tampa Bay secure a pivotal win over the Boston Red Sox and sole possession of first place in AL East. But as a backdrop for the excitement on the field, the weather staged an unforgettable performance.

It began with a thunderstorm that passed directly over Fenway in the five o’clock hour, prior to the game, as if to portend the rocky events to come.

The thunderstorm was followed by a beautiful rainbow – offering a false sense of security?

The real spectacle arrived during game’s late innings, as new storms moved in as the sun was setting. At the time, the Red Sox trailed 2-1. Look at this series of dramatic pictures from Instagram and Twitter:

there’s some pretty serious cloud action here at Fenway right now via sdurkkk on Instagram:

The storms, which concentrated north of Fenway, produced a brief downpour that led to a 38 minute delay prior to the bottom of the eighth when Boston’s Daniel Nava was called out at home plate. Instant replay showed he was safe. That run would’ve tied the game. The controversial play ignited its own storm, including the vehement protest and subsequent ejection of Red Sox skipper John Farrell.

Here’s a radar loop and satellite view of the evening’s storms:
