FORECAST IN DETAIL

The area of high pressure responsible for the spectacular September weather the last two days will be nudged out of the way today by a cold front zipping by. As a result, today could see some added clouds and perhaps an isolated sprinkle. While weak, the front is strong enough to knock down Friday’s temperatures to about ten degrees below average. High pressure moves back in by the weekend providing warm and dry days into early next week.

Today (Thursday): Today’s cold front won’t be dramatic as it does not pose any kind of significant storm or heavy rain threat, but I wouldn’t rule out a sprinkle here or there as it passes.  Its most noticeable impacts will be some increase in clouds, breezy conditions of sustained winds of 5-10 mph gusting to around 15 mph, and cooler temperatures behind the front.  The front does not appear to move through the region until later in the day, so we should reach highs in the low to mid-80s. Confidence: High

Tonight: Winds slacken a bit as the cold front exits leaving behind clearing skies and winds out of the northwest.  Overnight low temperatures in the area could get quite cool, ranging from the upper 40s in the western suburbs at higher elevations to the mid-50s for those areas closer to downtown.  Due to the maritime influence of the Chesapeake Bay, nearby locations will experience a milder night with lows near 60. Confidence: High

nice dayTomorrow (Friday): The average high for this time of year is around 84 degrees, and highs tomorrow could be up to ten degrees colder thanks to the cold front.  With highs in the low to mid-70s, it will feel more like late September or even early October.  With mostly sunny skies and light winds from the north, enjoy the taste of autumn! Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Brr!  Friday night could be just as chilly as Thursday night, with lows dipping into the upper 40s to mid-50s.  While mid-50s for downtown D.C. may not seem cold, lows this time of year should be in the upper 60s.  The last time Reagan National recorded lows in the 50s was late May.  Pack a light jacket for those Friday night football games! Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

This is your two-day’s notice to make outdoor weekend plans!  With high pressure anchored overhead Saturday should be a great day to get outside.  Saturday will feature high temperatures close to average in the low to mid-80s with mostly sunny skies and there will be a noticeable wind shift out of the south adding a warm and breezy feel to the day.  Saturday night will also be warmer than the last couple of nights with mild lows in the upper 50s to mid-60s; also closer to average! Confidence: Medium-High

Like Saturday, Sunday should also be a nice day to get outside.  High temperatures will stay in the low to mid-80s, but there could be a slight increase in clouds as a weak secondary cold front approaches.  The influence of this front will also introduce a slight probability of rain into the forecast, especially for later in the day.  Clouds linger on Sunday night, but temperatures stay mild ranging in the upper 50s to low 60s from west to east. Confidence: Medium

With partly cloudy skies and highs right around 80 region-wide, it appears Monday will feature nice weather to kick off the work week! Confidence: Medium
