FORECAST IN DETAIL

Don’t write off summer just yet, even with today’s reprieve. It isn’t yet pronounced dead… Just taking the day off. Speaking of which, that sounds like a good idea if you can do it. This weekend turns a bit warmer if you need to head to the beach or pool again as well! There’s even a chance not only will our gardens be parched, but our lips/skin may feel a bit dry for a short time too. Enjoy the early signs (and day-to-day volatility) of our transitional season…

Today (Friday): Perfect, or at least very close to it, with temperatures pleasantly about 10 degrees below average in the low-to-mid 70s. Upper 70s possible in the sunniest of spots south of town? Light north breezes around 5-10 mph encourage some autumnal feeling, even with (bright) mainly sunny skies. Blue skies this blue mean little protection from UV, so still consider some sunscreen around solar noon at 1:05 p.m. Confidence: High

Tonight: Clear and crisp! Can I be excited? Even downtown where I normally don’t cool off, low temperatures get into the mid-50s. Upper 40s possible outside the Beltway. Running several degrees cooler than average is fine when our averages are warm anyway, agreed? Assuming we get to the 50s at DCA, as Kathryn pointed out yesterday, it will be the first time since late May. If staying out late, you really may need a jacket even though variable-direction breezes remain light around 5 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Saturday): Huzzah. High pressure remains in control with mainly sunny conditions, and essentially zero rain chances. High temperatures do rebound a bit higher to around 78-82, with perhaps a few mid-80s south of town. A slight southerly breeze around 5 mph starts bringing in some water vapor, but we fall short of feeling muggy. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Skies may turn partly cloudy and that should keep temperatures somewhat higher than tonight. Mid-60s are possible downtown, with upper 50s more likely in cooler spots like Winchester, Frederick, and Martinsburg. Average doesn’t feel so bad though. Confidence: Medium-High

Sunday: Still decent, just a greater number of clouds. High temperatures should end up around the mid-80s, but that assumes a moderate mix of clouds and sun. More sun means a few degrees warmer, with less sun meaning a few degrees cooler. Later in the day, I should mention the 10-15% chance of a light shower being possible. We have a disturbance moving toward us out of the west. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Sunday night: Upper 50s to lower 60s look like a good bet for low temperatures just prior to dawn, with about a 20% chance of a shower possible overnight. Nothing too heavy from what it looks like now. Outside of any shower or two, skies remain fairly cloudy. Confidence: Medium

Monday should have some sunshine, but periodic clouds may also bubble up. If cold air aloft indeed keeps the atmosphere above us unstable later in the day, we could see a few thundershowers (15-20% chance) but nothing substantial enough to relieve gardeners. High temperatures near 80 to the mid-80s seem a good bet. Confidence: Low-Medium

Tuesday’s has a chance to turn muggy just a bit, and with juicier air comes a slightly augmented threat (20-30% chance) of showers, perhaps a rumble of thunder too. High temps are back into the mid-80s, perhaps upper 80s in some spots, especially south of town. Sunshine should be hidden by clouds from time to time, hopefully mitigating sweating a bit. Confidence: Low
