FORECAST IN DETAIL

The autumnal equinox – otherwise known as the start of fall – occurs at 4:44 this afternoon. Summer’s last full day ended on a soggy note yesterday, but today we welcome fall with a brilliant splash of warm September sun coupled with a cool breeze. Temperatures turn quite cool tonight and even colder tomorrow night, when we have a shot at reaching our coldest September low since 2001 (it hit 46 on Sept. 26 that year).

Today (Sunday): The cold front and any lingering showers should be well east of the area this morning, though some clouds may hang around early. Skies turn mostly sunny by late morning yielding a pleasant afternoon, especially for those attending the last day of the National Book Festival on the Mall. Highs crest in the low-to-mid 70s with a noticeable breeze from the northwest around 10-15 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: As skies remain mostly clear and winds die down, temperatures turn rather cool, dipping to the mid-to-upper 40s across the northern and western suburbs and bottoming in the low 50s elsewhere. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Monday): High pressure moves closer to the area and brings with it the core of cool air from Canada. This early-season cool shot limits highs to the upper 60s and low 70s area-wide, some 8 to 10 degrees below normal. Winds are light from the northwest at 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Temperatures really tumble with clear and nearly calm conditions settling in. Lows drop to near 40 in the far-out suburbs (could even see some upper 30s), the low-to-mid 40s in the counties immediately surrounding the District, and the upper 40s to near 50 in town. Any winds would be light and from the north.  Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Gorgeous fall weather continues into midweek (and likely beyond), with plentiful sunshine and a slight warming trend starting on Tuesday, when highs head for the mid-70s. Wednesday could offer a few more clouds, but for right now mostly sunny and dry should suffice, with highs hitting the upper 70s to near 80. Confidence: Medium
