FORECAST IN DETAIL

Temperature Map

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Monday’s healthy rain event was the most productive since the first half of July around the Washington, D.C. area, and it ushered in a swift shift to cooler conditions.  However, the responsible front and associated energy is struggling to leave the East Coast.  This presents prognostication challenges for the next number of days.

There may be some lingering cloud cover today, before a ripple develops along the stalled front offering more clouds Wednesday and even some rain or drizzle risks by Thursday and Friday – which could even linger into Saturday.  Some may cheer more rain chances, but forecast confidence is lower on getting these details correct and determining the state of the coming weekend.

Today (Tuesday):  Partly sunny skies today with very comfortable temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s.  There may be more sunshine to the north and west of the city and more lingering overcast east and south due to the stalled frontal system along the coastal areas.  Winds are light from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph.  Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Partly cloudy skies and cool temperatures with lows ranging from the 40s in the suburbs to the low 50s in the city.  Some outer suburbs in the west could dip toward the low to middle 40s, while inner suburbs should be more in the upper 40s.  Light breezes drift through mainly from the northeast direction.  Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Partly to mostly cloudy skies with comfortable temperatures in the middle to upper 60s.  A slight chance of a light shower or drizzle is possible south and east of the city especially toward late afternoon or evening.  Light winds continue from a northeasterly direction. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Mostly cloudy with light showers around the area, but mainly east of the city.  Lows dip mainly into the 50s, but a few far western suburb spots could be in the upper 40s to around 50.  Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday seems to be the best chance to see more scattered showers or light rain/drizzle, especially in the eastern half of the region.  Rainfall totals should be light, but we’ll have to watch the situation closely.  Highs aim for the middle to upper 60s.  Thursday night is mostly cloudy with light rain or drizzle also possible.  Lows drop into the 50s.  Confidence: Medium

Friday finds more of the same with cool onshore flow, cloudy skies, and scattered light showers or drizzle as temperatures again only lift up into the middle to upper 60s.  Mostly cloudy Friday night with a slight chance of showers or drizzle again.  Confidence: Low-Medium

The weekend should start to break free of this stalled situation, but Saturday could still be snagged by the stationary system yet. For now, we’ll aim for partly cloudy skies on Saturday with partly to mostly sunny skies on Sunday.  Highs in the lower to middle 70s, but if more clouds linger on Saturday, it could still be upper 60s to around 70 instead.  Saturday night should be partly cloudy with lows in the upper 40s to middle 50s.  Confidence: Low Saturday and Low-Medium Sunday
