The whirling dervish along the coast looks set to drop anchor through Sunday. It should produce some much needed moisture that comes in slow enough to nicely soak gardens still in need of more moisture. Fortunately, by the weekend the storm system practically rains itself out so we are left with mainly sprinkles. The problem is they are possible just about any time so hoodies are de rigueur. Perhaps on Columbus Day, Monday, we can re-discover the sun!

Today (Thursday): While unlikely to be non-stop, the periods of showers (90% chance) should be frequent. A deep cloud cover keeps temperatures struggling to make much headway. Highs should only top out in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Much of the area has a good chance of picking up at least a half inch of moisture during the day. Winds are brisk from the north at 10-15 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: There should be another band or two of showers crossing the region in the evening and late night. Rain chances are still at 80% and most areas should pick up another quarter inch or better. Lows only slip to the low-to-mid 50s but this is cool enough to lead to some patchy fog. Breezes out of the north remain at 10-15 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Friday): This day marks the last day of the season that Reagan National has a record high in the 90s. It is a very safe bet that that record will remain intact. Clouds blanket the area with highs only reaching the lower 60s in most areas. Showers should be much more infrequent today, 60% chance, and amounts in most of the area run a tenth of an inch or less. Winds do not let up, still coming from the north at 10-15 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: The showers continue to diminish but a few should compliment the occasional drizzle (50% chance). No doubt a damp, cool evening is on tap. Overnight lows end up in the mid-to-upper 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday marks our last day of normal highs above 70 and we are not very likely to achieve that. However, with sparser showers (40% chance) highs should make the low-to-mid 60s. Breezes are still likely to make it feel cooler. Overnight changes little with a few scattered showers and lows holding in the mid-to-upper 50s. Confidence: Medium

Sunday shows minimal improvement with a few showers (40% chance) still possible and clouds unlikely to show many breaks until late afternoon. Highs are mainly in the mid-60s. Overnight lows are mostly mid-50s. Confidence: Medium

Columbus Day (Monday) is our big chance to break out of this mess. High pressure pushing down from the north may be just enough to push the showers and worst of the clouds to our south. If all goes well, highs should end up near 70 which should feel great after our days of dampness. Confidence: Low-Medium
