FORECAST IN DETAIL

Clouds: Latest mid-Atlantic infrared satellite shows movement of clouds over past two hours. Refresh page to update. See more maps on our Weather Wall.

The storm which sat off the coast for more than four days has finally, more or less, fallen apart. That should allow sunshine to make a long-awaited return today.   Compared to last week, this week is much more settled, but a couple fronts bring rain chances in the middle and later parts of the week.

Today (Monday): Some of us may awaken to some fog and even a little drizzle due to lingering moisture.  Sky cover is variable, overall today. It tends cloudier in the morning, but with increasing sunshine in the afternoon. Highs are pleasant, right around 70 degrees.  Light winds from the northeast, around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Partly cloudy and seasonably cool, with lows ranging from the upper 40s to low 50s. Light winds Confidence: Medium-High

nice dayTomorrow (Tuesday): A well-deserved mostly sunny day! Temperatures are right where they should be in mid-October, with highs near 70. Winds are from the east around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear early with perhaps some high clouds moving in towards morning.  Lows range from the upper 40s in the cooler suburbs to the low-to-mid 50s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Increasing clouds Wednesday with a slight (20-30 percent) chance of afternoon or evening showers.  The best odds are north of District.  Highs range from 65-70.  Any evening showers fade, and clouds slowly decrease overnight, with lows 50-55 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Medium

Partly cloudy Thursday,  perhaps becoming mostly cloudy late as low pressure tries to develop to the south.  Highs reach the upper 60s. Depending on the development and track of the low, we may see a period of rain late Thursday afternoon into Thursday night (30 percent chance).  Thursday night’s lows are in the low-to-mid 50s. Confidence: Medium

Friday looks good, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-60s. Mostly clear Friday night, with lows in the mid-40s in the cooler suburbs to the low 50s downtown. Confidence: Medium

The weekend’s a question mark as low pressure may try to organize to the south bringing a chance of rain by Saturday afternoon and/or night and perhaps lasting into Sunday.  The European model favors this damp outlook, but the GFS computer model suggests dry (and sunny) weather with high pressure in control.  I’ll slightly favor the wetter, European solution, with rain possible from late Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, but stay tuned for possible forecast updates. Highs should be mostly in the 60s, with lows in the 50s. Confidence: Low
