FORECAST IN DETAIL

A gradual warming trend is the main story over the next few days ahead of a massive late-week cold front.  While temperatures improve on the comfort scale, we do battle clouds that make the sunshine less reliable in the coming days.  The best news is that a showery cool front may wait to move through until after most of the little ones have scavenged for tricks and treats Thursday evening.  Showers seem more likely late Thursday night into Friday.  Slow clearing and cooling comes this weekend.

Temperature Map

Today (Tuesday): Morning temperatures aren’t as cool as they’ve been the last several days thanks to the overnight clouds, but it’s still brisk out there to start.  And onshore flow courtesy high pressure passing to the north of us should put a lid on how warm we ultimately get.  Sky cover should vary through the day, so we’ll go with partly cloudy as highs lift to around 60 or the low-to-mid 60s depending on sunshine levels.  Light winds at 5-10 mph come mainly from the northeast.   Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Partly cloudy and not as cool again with lows ranging from the middle 40s to near 50 (some cooler spots possible in outlying areas).  Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): We have a slight chance of a morning shower. Otherwise, skies are partly cloudy again, but temperatures get a boost as the air mass modifies and some breezes begin to arrive from the south.  Look for highs in the more comfortable mid-to-upper 60s.  Light and variable winds.  Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly to mostly cloudy and warmer with lows ranging from the upper 40s to the middle 50s.  Light winds.  Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday (Halloween!) aims for our warmest day of the week as highs soar into the low-to-mid 70s across the area under partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Skies should be cloudiest later in the day with the best chance for sun sneak attacks in the morning.  Thursday evening finds a 30% chance for showers mainly in the western to northwestern suburbs, with better odds (60% chance) for more numerous showers not until the overnight and toward morning as lows only dip to the mid-to-upper 50s.   Confidence: Medium

Friday brings the first day of November and a good chance (60%) of showers in the morning until about midday.  There could even be a little thunder with some of the more moderate showers.  Highs should be mild again, in the upper 60s to perhaps the low 70s.  Friday night offers some partial clearing and cooler temperatures as they drop through the 60s during the evening and then settle into the low-to-mid 50s for lows.  Confidence: Medium

The weekend slowly edges cooler with highs in the 60s Saturday and only 50s on Sunday, which may be breezy as well, under partly to mostly sunny skies.  Lows Saturday night should be in the low-to-mid 40s with some upper 30s in colder spots.   Confidence: Medium
