December snowstorms in Washington are fairly uncommon, especially in the first half.  During recent years, we’ve had a bizarre string of December 5 snowstorms, but not too many other notable events have occurred during the month (of course, Snowpocalypse stands out!).  January and particularly February are the big snow months for D.C.  December snow is basically a bonus for snow lovers.

This year, we can add a December 8 snowstorm (and ice storm) to the weather archives for Washington.  Perhaps we can even add another snowstorm or two before the month is over.  The pattern is looking at least somewhat promising.

Below is an assortment of snow photos taken Sunday in Washington.  The National Christmas tree was our target for shooting photos, but we photographed a few different areas in town.  Also included is a short video of the ice storm taken this morning near Oakton, Virginia.

Of note, while the snowstorm was fairly light in the immediate Washington area, the small National Christmas Tree town located on the Ellipse near the tree took a crippling hit.  See the photos near the end of this post that show the magnitude of the snow which buried their homes and vehicles.
