FORECAST IN DETAIL

The high temperature at Reagan National has been 45 or lower since Dec. 7, with the exception of Dec. 15 when D.C. reached 51. After one more cold day today, we finally break out into a several day stretch of highs near and above 50, perhaps even near 70 this weekend. That weekend warmth, however, comes with a decent chance of showers, though no definite washout.

Today (Wednesday): Yesterday’s constant gray is replaced with partly to mostly sunny skies. Meanwhile, temperatures find themselves in a similar spot to Tuesday, with highs heading for near 40. Breezes from the west-northwest around 15 mph add a chill that partially negates any warmth from the sun. Confidence: High

Tonight: We’ve got a chilly one on the way with mostly clear skies, lows in the 20s (perhaps low 20s in the outer burbs) to near 30, and light winds from the south. Confidence: High

0 (↓) Temps on their way to well above freezing for several days. Colder by day 7 but no precip around.

Tomorrow night: Evening temperatures aren’t bad at all, dropping into the 40s. Overnight, we’re partly to mostly clear and a good deal warmer than tonight with lows in the 30s, maybe mid-to-upper 30s for many spots. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Friday should start partly to mostly sunny, and with a continued warm flow from the south-southwest, afternoon highs aim for the upper 50s to near 60. Clouds may increase some during the afternoon with a slight chance of a late-day shower. Friday night we see a 30% chance of a few light showers with mild lows in the 40s. Confidence: Medium

As for the weekend, Saturday brings a 40% chance of showers, but they would probably be light, and a good part of the day may end up dry with pleasant highs in the 60s. Shower chances increase to 50% on Sunday as a cold front approaches from the west, but there are some indications that precipitation may largely hold off until late in the day or at night. Oh, and get this — Sunday highs could flirt with 70. Confidence: Low-Medium
