PM Update: Warmth takes hold, regional temperature variations, and sunrise magic

Temperature Map

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Temperatures squarely overachieved today, rocketing to near 60 degrees in the immediate metro region. It turns chilly overnight, but there’s little reason to believe it won’t be at least as mild and delightful on Friday.

Through Tonight: Clear to partly cloudy and chilly. Lows range from near freezing in the colder north and west suburbs to closer to 40 downtown. Light winds from the southwest at around 5 mph.

Tomorrow (Friday): High pressure to the southeast pumps in more mild air into the region. The National Weather Service’s forecast says expect a high of 57, but given that we reached 60 under a colder atmosphere today, I’ve gotta think we see highs of at least 60 tomorrow, if not mid-60s. The only wrinkle would be more cloud cover than expected which might hold us in the 50s. Winds are out of the southwest around 10 mph.

Regional temperature variations: This afternoon, we saw a remarkable range in temperatures across the region…from around 60 in the immediate metro area, to just the mid-40s around Frederick and mid-40s in Annapolis. Frederick was much cooler due to lingering snow cover. The image above shows the view from space on Wednesday, revealing considerable snow cover lingering in northern and western Maryland as well as much of Pennsylvania. The cooler temperatures in Annapolis are a direct result of its location on the Chesapeake Bay. The water temperature there is just 41 degrees.

This morning’s sunrise: It was another beautiful start to the day locally, with terrific sunrise views. Here are a few images submitted to us:
