FORECAST IN DETAIL

Temperature Map

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Our recent time out from winter has officially ended as cold air pours back into the region.  In fact, a weak disturbance this afternoon could even whip up a few snow flurries to enhance the seasonal flavor.

Christmas Day is the coldest day of the week, but at least light winds and sunny skies rule before temperatures gradually moderate Thursday into Saturday with partly to mostly sunny skies.  Sunday pops us into the warmer 50s before another cold front sweeps through to chill down next week around the New Year’s holiday.

Today (Christmas Eve):  A cold upper level trough is swinging into the area, bringing colder weather and mixed skies.   That variable cloud cover should allow the sun to peek through at times, but also keep an eye out for some scattered, harmless, wind-whipped flurries in the afternoon.  While highs should reach the upper 30s to low 40s, winds in the 10-20 mph range (and sometimes gusty) from the northwest make the air frequently feel like the 20s to low 30s instead.  Dress warmly.  Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Winds should turn toward the calmer side as skies clear overnight and temperatures drop into the 20s throughout the area.  We may see some teens in the far western and northern exurbs. Decent visibility and travel conditions expected for anyone flying around in the middle of the night on a large sleigh.  Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Christmas Day): A mostly sunny day greets the holiday.  Winds are very light, but temperatures still stall out in the lower to middle 30s.  A few more clouds may pop onto the scene by late afternoon into the evening.  Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and cold with lows again ranging through the 20s (lower out toward the outer suburbs and upper 20s in the city).  Winds are light, offering a silent night.  Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Thursday and Friday are a pair of similar days with partly to mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the lower to middle 40s, and dry weather throughout.  Thursday and Friday night are partly cloudy with lows again ranging through the 20s.  Confidence: Medium-High

The final weekend of December brings a bit of warmer weather back into the picture. Highs are in the middle to upper 40s Saturday under mostly sunny skies, and lower to middle 50s on Sunday with partly sunny skies.   Saturday night is partly cloudy with lows in the upper 20s to middle 30s.  Sunday night should see a dry cold front sweep through the area, delivering another cold air mass  just ahead of the New Year’s holiday.  Confidence: Medium
