The Chaparrastique volcano, about 90 miles east of El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, erupted Sunday, spewing smoke and ash over 15,000 feet into the sky.
NOAA’s Environmental Visualization Laboratory featured this image, displaying the smoke plume as seen by the Suomi NPP Satellite.
The Associated Press reports government officials are asking residents within about one mile of the volcano to evacuate.
