Dusting to 2″ fell overnight, up to 6″ in southern Maryland; forecast was solid

The storm which crippled parts of the Southeast, produced mainly a light, powdery snow in the D.C. metro region.  The exception to this was in Southern Maryland, where 2-6 inches of snow accumulated.

Snowfall totals from last night’s storm (National Weather Service)

Officially, Reagan National Airport picked up 0.9 inches of snow (0.5″ Tuesday, and 0.4″ Wednesday), Dulles 0.3 inches and BWI Airport 0.1 inches.  Inside the Beltway, most reports into the National Weather Service and from Capital Weather Gang readers were between 0.5-1″.  South and southwest of the Beltway, 1-2 inches fell.  North of I-66 and west of the Beltway, accumulations generally fell into the dusting designation, with less than half an inch.

Southern Calvert and southern St. Mary’s counties hit the jackpot, with totals of 4-6 inches in that region.

To get into the really hefty totals, you need to head to southeast Virginia, around Virginia Beach and Norfolk, where 5-10 inches accumulated.  My friend and fellow meteorologist Karl Mertig reports 8.5 inches in northern Virginia Beach, 2 miles from Lynnhaven Inlet. In Richmond, roughly 2-4 inches fell.

A good forecast

Our snowfall map issued yesterday just before noon did a nice job summarizing the amount of snow that would fall… and we also got the timing more or less right.

Capital Weather Gang snowfall forecast Tuesday night, issued 11:58 a.m. Tuesday

In a few spots in southern Maryland, amounts exceeded our 2-4 inch most likely range and entered our boom 4-8″ category.  Also,  a bit more snow fell southwest of the District than we were expecting.  Some spots in Culpeper, southern Fauquier, and Madison County received 1-2 inches of snow, when we had them in our trace to 1 inch band.
