D.C. area forecast: Snow moves out, makes way for a warm-up

5 a.m. update: Radar shows precipitation in southern Maryland and the northern neck of Virginia rapidly moving east, exiting the region in the next hour. The storm was mainly an underachiever, with snow amounts from around a coating (0.25-0.75″) in the metro region to an inch or so north and northwest of town – at the low end of projections. Let us know much snow you got in the comments below. Some useful links: School delays | Snow total reports from the National Weather Service.

A quick burst of winter weather early this morning should be ending quickly by the front end of rush hour with sunshine breaking out mid-to-late morning.  Then we embark upon a significant warming trend that carries us through the balance of the week. The peak warm day looks to be Friday, but rain is also scheduled unfortunately by afternoon.  The weekend is a bit variable, but still warmer-than-normal and mostly dry ahead of what looks to be a cold final week of February.

Today (Tuesday):  Snow or maybe a mix of sleet/drizzle/snow fades quickly this morning.  The responsible, fast-moving weather system clears the area from west to east over the first few daylight hours with sunshine quickly returning mid-to-late morning to mostly dominate the afternoon.  Combined with winds from the west at 10-15 mph, temperatures should surge into the middle to upper 40s around the area with a few locations touching 50 as well.  Confidence: Medium

Tonight: Just a few clouds around with light winds. Lows range from 25-34 (suburbs-city). Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): A warm front lifts through the area in the morning with associated cloudy skies and light showers, but we should clear out and warm up in the afternoon with partly sunny skies (assuming the front pushes far enough north).  Morning temperatures in the 30s should elevate to the middle to upper 40s by afternoon.  Variable winds shift to come from mostly the west at light levels in the afternoon.  Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy with lows ranging from the middle 20s in the outer suburbs to the middle 30s in the city.  Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Snow Potential Index

A daily assessment of the potential for at least ~1″ of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

2 ( ↓) After this morning’s fast-mover, the pattern looks too warm through weekend. But may turn active again in another week.

Thursday features even warmer weather with partly sunny skies.  Comfortable highs in the middle to maybe upper 50s.  Partly cloudy and much warmer Thursday night as lows only dip slightly into the 40s.  Confidence: Medium-High

Friday starts quite warm with partly sunny skies and morning temperatures surging up into the low-to-middle 60s by late morning and midday.  A cold front hits by afternoon with more clouds, showers (some heavy), and even some rumbles of thunder possible with temperatures cooling back to the 50s by mid-to-late afternoon and then the 40s by evening.  Mostly cloudy, a bit colder, and breezy Friday night with lows in the upper 20s to middle 30s.  Confidence: Medium

The weekend should still lean warmer than normal as we get another brief rebound ahead of another cold front.  Highs on Saturday with partly sunny skies should range through the 50s with lows Saturday night in the 30s to near 40 under partly cloudy skies.  Sunday should see highs in the 50s with a outside chance for some more pleasant low 60s  as skies range between some clouds and some sun.  We must enjoy this warm break as the weather guidance favors a cold final work week of February to follow.  Confidence: Medium
