FORECAST IN DETAIL

Like a bad dream, winter 2013-2014 is back with a brief period of sleet and snow last evening, and temperatures near to below freezing early this morning with a breeze to boot. The freezing mark is back in play again tonight before we struggle back toward spring tomorrow into the weekend. It’s a mostly dry forecast throughout, except for a chance of showers Friday night.

Temperature Map

Temperatures: Latest D.C. area temperature map. See interactive map on our Weather Wall.

Today (Wednesday): Winter is back with early-morning lows in the mid-20s to low 30s. A lingering breeze near 15 mph from the northwest (with some higher gusts) keeps wind chills in the 20s to low 30s through much of the morning. Despite plenty of sun, highs only reach near 50 to the low 50s with lighter afternoon winds. That’s 10-15 degrees below average, and frankly kind of annoying after our recent warmth. Confidence: High

Tonight: Not as cold as last night under partly to mostly clear skies. But evening readings dropping through the 40s are plenty cool. And overnight lows ranging through the 30s are still well below normal. Watch out in the suburbs, especially the north and west ones, where it’s it’s another night to protect sensitive plants from temperatures flirting with freezing or a touch below. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): We’re still on the cool side for mid-April, especially in the morning as temperatures rise into the 40s. But mostly sunny skies and afternoon highs near 60 should win at least some applause. Winds are not too much of a factor, around 10 mph from the east-southeast. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: High pressure maintains enough influence to keep conditions calm but still somewhat cool. Evening temperatures fall through the 50s before overnight lows bottom in the mid-to-upper 30s in the outer suburbs to low 40s downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

We’re still stuck with a wedge of cooler air over the area on Friday. And increasing clouds may even keep some spots cooler than Thursday. Highs probably max out in the upper 50s to near 60 with a light but cool breeze from the east. Friday night could see considerable clouds and a few showers (40% chance) with lows in the 40s back to near average. Confidence: Medium

Can’t rule out a shower or two Saturday morning. Otherwise the weekend looks quite nice with partly to mostly sunny skies, Saturday and Sunday highs in the 60s, and Saturday night lows in the 40s. Confidence: Medium
