D.C. area forecast: Sunshine and daytime breezes dominate through the weekend

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 1 to 10.

Pollen-filled breezes may keep this fairly sunny day from perfection. I think comfortable 70s deserve high marks!

Express Forecast

Today: Mainly sunny, breezy. Afternoon clouds? Highs: Near 70 to mid-70s.

Tonight: More clouds than stars. Lows: Mid-40s to mid-50s (downtown).

Tomorrow: Sunny, just patchy clouds. Breezy. Highs: Low-to-mid 70s.

Sunday: Mainly sunny, still breezy. Highs: Low-to-mid 70s.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

Mother Nature has found her breezy blow dryer and luckily left it off the “hot” setting for this weekend. Comfortable air should reign as we enjoy a well-timed dry streak of weather ahead with very low chances for showers until Monday night. With many outdoor events and festivals this weekend, I think temperatures mostly near average in the 70s should do the trick!

nice dayToday (Friday): Sunshine should dominate but clouds are slowly on the increase and more noticeable as the day wears on. I don’t think we’ll see much if anything out of said clouds. Westerly breezes could be noticeable in the 5-15 mph range, sometimes gusting above 20 mph. If we get perfectly aligned downsloping “Tuckahoe “ (our local version of “Chinook”) breezes off of the Blue Ridge, we could add a few degrees to projected high temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s. I wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of an 80-degree reading in central VA, for instance. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Clouds really may attempt to shroud our crescent moon after sunset, but we stay comfortable as temperatures fall more slowly under insulating clouds. Pre-dawn temperatures should bottom out in the mid-to-upper 40s outside the Beltway, but mid-50s are possible in our downtown heat island. Breezes may lightly blow around 5-10 mph out of the northwest. Confidence: High

nice dayTomorrow (Saturday): Variably cloudy at times, but I think sunshine should prevail. Shower chances remain low around 10-15%, so don’t worry too much about some of the passing cumulus clouds. Breezes could cool us in the shade, as they might gust toward 20 mph a few times from the southwesterly direction. Still, as I am sure you know, the southwesterly direction is a warm wind direction for us, and said breezes should help us get into late afternoon high temperatures of low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Breezes probably remain noticeable overnight but we probably won’t be talking about a wind chill factor with pre-dawn temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s. Pretty much average for the time of year! No complaints here. Confidence: Medium-High

Sunday: This could be close to a carbon copy of Saturday with perhaps just a bit more sunshine. Similar breezes out of the west or southwest. We will see if a weak springtime cold front sneaks through the area to dry us out (even more) with late day northwesterly breezes. We may only notice a few moments of clouds but likely very few rain drops to be found (under 20% chance). High temperatures are enjoyable, again mainly in the low-to-mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Sunday night: Skies should stay fairly clear overnight with low temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s. A 50 degree reading downtown wouldn’t completely surprise me, either. Confidence: Medium-High

Seasonable morning crispness in the 50s awakens us on Monday. High temperatures under sunny skies should easily climb toward upper 60s to low 70s, by late afternoon. A few clouds could increase overhead by sunset, but any showers should hold off until later at night. I don’t know about you, but I will be eying some outdoor Cinco de Mayo plans, after work. Confidence: Medium

Tuesday’s sun could be muted a bit by periodic clouds and showers. But don’t worry too much since right now it appears there is only a 25-35% chance of seeing drops. It might not amount to much, and drying out a bit more might be welcome news. High temperatures should still manage to get into the upper 60s to low 70s. Not a bad day, overall? Confidence: Low-Medium
