D.C. area forecast: Partly cloudy, maybe some showers tonight; a taste of summer late week

9:30 a.m. update: Skies are mostly sunny and the satellite views shows a lot of the cloud cover stream to our south and west. I’ve updated the forecast to allow for more sunshine today, though clouds should increase some in the afternoon. I’ve lowered the chance of rain this afternoon to 20 percent as it appears most activity should wait until evening and it will be scattered, with the best chance of showers south of D.C.  The chance of rain after 6 p.m. or so increases to 40-60 percent, highest chances south of town.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

The week is a tale of two seasons. The first half feels like spring, with highs in the 60s to near 70 and the occasional shower possibility.  During the second half of the week, we jump to summer – with temperatures surging into the 80s, with more shower opportunities.  It  could be one of those years in which spring-weather gets short-changed as we seemingly go from winter to summer without much buffer.

Today (Monday):  Clouds tend to increase during the day but are mostly sunny in the morning.  There’s a slight (20 percent) chance of showers –  into the evening.  Highs are mostly in the upper 60s though cooler if it clouds over earlier or warmer (into the low 70s) if we stay mostly sunny.  Winds are from the northwest at 10-15 mph, gusting to 20-25 mph.  High Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Scattered showers are a  possibility (40-60 percent chance), with the highest rain chances south of town.  Overnight lows range from the mid-40s to near 50 (downtown). Winds are light from the west and become calm.  Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Cloudy in the morning, but then becoming mostly sunny.  Highs head up into the upper 60s to around 70 with winds from the north at 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Mostly clear to partly cloudy and cool.  Lows range from near 40 in our cooler suburbs to near 50 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

Wednesday marks the transition point between our spring- and summer-like weather pattern.  Skies are partly sunny, with highs mostly in the upper 60s.  However, a warm front punches through the region late in the day or at night, when a shower or two is possible (30 percent chance).  The warm front shifts the wind from out of the north to more out of the south. Wednesday night is mild, with lows mostly in the 50s. Confidence: Medium-High

Thursday and Friday are both partly to mostly sunny and quite warm.  Highs Thursday are in the low 80s, with mid-to-upper 80s Friday – the warmest of 2014, so far. Both days should be rain-free with overnight lows mostly in the 50s to near 60 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

The warmth hangs around for the weekend, with highs around 80 each day.  Little waves forming along a front stalled just to our west may mean there are some periods of showers and storms.  It doesn’t look like a washout, but worth keeping an eye on. Overnight lows are around 55-60.  Confidence: Medium
