D.C. area forecast: Cloudy day with midday storm risk before much warmer 80s

10:35 a.m. update: Radar shows a complex of showers and embedded storms (with some lightning) in eastern West Virginia moving into the I-81 corridor. This complex should arrive in our western suburbs between 11:30 and noon and move into the immediate metro area between noon and 1 p.m. Downpours, thunder/lightning and some gusty winds are possible as this moves through. It should exit by mid-afternoon.

Express Forecast

Today: Increasing clouds. Shower or sprinkle? Highs: Mid-60s to near 70.

Tonight: A shower or thundershower possible. Lows: Mid-50s to near 60.

Tomorrow: Warm with increasing sun. Highs: Low-to-mid 80s.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

Warm-weather fans might see today’s slightly cooler temperatures and even the chance of a light shower as a small step in the wrong direction. But tomorrow we start a solid stretch with highs near or past 80. We’ll be able to enjoy the warmth mainly rain-free Thursday and Friday, before shower and thundershower chances enter the picture this weekend.

Today (Wednesday): After a possible period of early-to-mid morning sun, partly to mostly cloudy skies thereafter hold temperatures down a bit from yesterday. Morning readings rise through the 50s with afternoon highs probably peaking in the mid-60s to near 70. A warm front in the area, along with a light onshore breeze from the southeast near 5-10 mph, may muster a shower or sprinkle during the midday into afternoon. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Mostly cloudy skies might produce a shower or thundershower this evening or overnight. Temperatures fall back toward lows in the mid-50s to near 60, while dew points rise on a light breeze from the south-southeast. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Thursday): Early-morning clouds, with perhaps a leftover light shower or sprinkle, give way to at least partly sunny skies and a warmer breeze from the southwest increasing to near 10 mph. By afternoon it’s a touch summery with highs in the low-to-mid 80s — I say bring it on! Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: The evening is a comfortably mild one as readings edge back into the 70s. Overnight lows settle in the upper 50s to mid-60s under partly cloudy skies. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

Friday could be a bit warmer still as milder air continues to stream in from the south and southwest. That should lift highs to the mid-to-upper 80s with partly to mostly sunny skies and just a hint of humidity. Friday night finds a 20% chance of a shower and warm lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

A bit of an unsettled weekend pattern spells partly cloudy skies and a chance of showers and thundershowers both days, though neither looks like a washout at this point. We’ll stay on the warm side with Saturday and Sunday highs targeting the upper 70s to low 80s, and Saturday night lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Confidence: Low
