D.C. area forecast: Trending cooler with multiple rain chances; risk of heavy rain late week

1:55 p.m. Update: Temperatures remain stuck in the mid-60s most spots with stubborn overcast skies above. Clouds may thin enough, or even break up a bit, late in the afternoon to allow highs to briefly reach the low-to-mid 70s in some places.

We won’t be flirting with 90 degrees the next several days, and in fact highs may fall short of 80 for many spots today. But the recent humidity lingers and fuels multiple rain threats through the end of the work week. Late-day thunderstorms are a risk both today and tomorrow, with the heaviest rain likely to come late Thursday night and Friday. We could be talking quite a bit of rain, too. The weekend looks sunnier and drier, though maybe not completely dry.

storm threat

Today (Wednesday): Not nearly as hot today but just as humid as yesterday. An onshore breeze from the east-southeast near 5-10 mph promotes areas of morning fog and perhaps a bit of drizzle. Afternoon skies should brighten and may turn partly sunny with highs in the mid-70s to near 80. Showers and thunderstorms are possible, mainly after 5 p.m. or so, with generally a 30-40% chance for any given location. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Evening shower/storm chances continue around 30-40%, and any storms could be heavy rain producers. The rain threat diminishes greatly by around or after midnight. Temperatures don’t drop much under mostly cloudy skies, as lows bottom in the mid-60s. Areas of fog and mist may return overnight. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow (Thursday): A cold front hangs far enough back to our west that we could squeeze out partial sunshine for much of the day. Highs head for near 80 and it’s still rather muggy for May. Showers and thunderstorms may try to penetrate east into our area late in the afternoon (30% chance). Breezes pick up during the day to near 10-15 mph from the south-southeast. Confidence: Medium

Tomorrow night: Shower and storm chances rise to 40% during the evening as the front edges closer, before rain becomes likely overnight. The rain, which could be quite heavy, knocks lows down into the 60s under overcast skies. Confidence: Medium

A LOOK AHEAD

Rain is likely Friday morning and could last into the afternoon. Highs probably struggle to reach 70 on what looks like a cool, breezy and soggy day. We could be talking a good soaking once all is said and done. Showers may even linger into Friday night as lows dip into the 50s. Confidence: Medium

High pressure gets the upper hand this weekend, but it may not be strong enough to eliminate the possibility of a couple showers or thunderstorms. We’ll call it partly sunny both Saturday and Sunday, with highs near 70 to the low 70s, and a 25% chance of a shower or thunderstorm each day. Confidence: Medium
