D.C. area forecast: Warmer today before a summery Memorial Day; storm chances return midweek

Today’s Daily Digit

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

10
A tad warm for a 10 on its own, but in context of a summer kickoff weekend, I’ll go double digits.

Express Forecast

Today: Mostly sunny and warm. Highs: Near 80 to mid-80s.

Tonight: Clear and calm. Lows: Mid-50s to low 60s.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny and very warm. Upper 80s to near 90.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

It’s not often we hit the weather bull’s-eye for a regular weekend, much less a long one, but we’re in the red this time for sure!  High pressure keeps us mostly clear, dry and pleasant right through Memorial Day. Temperatures creep to the warmer side today before really turning summer-like tomorrow, but with low humidity it’s a relatively enjoyable summer heat. As Tuesday dawns, the sun sets on our superb stretch, with a front bringing an unsettled midweek featuring increased clouds and chances for showers and thunderstorms.

nice dayToday (Sunday): It’s another winner out there today!  High pressure stays in control and only some scattered fair-weather clouds may manage to float across mostly sunny skies. Morning temperatures rise into the 60s and 70s before afternoon highs reach near 80 to the mid-80s.  Dew points stay on the lower side, keeping it from feeling too muggy, thanks to light winds from the west-northwest at 5-10 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: Any clouds should dissipate after the sun goes down, making for a clear and starry night as winds go calm. After evening readings fall back through the 70s to near 70, we’re looking at overnight lows ranging from the mid-to-upper 50s across the suburbs, to near 60 to the low 60s downtown. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Memorial Day): It’s the holiday that officially kicks off summer, and this year the weather does its part as well! Lots of sun plus a warm breeze from the southwest (near 5-10 mph) boost highs all the way to the upper 80s to near 90, while the humidity remains mostly in check. On one of the busiest BBQ days of the year, the weather won’t let you down, as long as you’ve got a pool or sprinkler nearby!  Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: It could feel a bit still and stuffy, especially during the overnight as the humidity creeps higher. Skies stay mostly clear and winds stay light, which could lead to some pockets of fog. Lows range from the low-to-mid 60s in the suburbs, to the upper 60s to near 70 downtown. Confidence: High

A LOOK AHEAD

As our long weekend ends, so does our run of beautiful weather.  A weak front sagging southward on Tuesday brings back a chance for showers and thunderstorms in the warm and unstable air. Highs should still rise to at least the mid-80s, even with increasing clouds and a 30-40% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Shower and storm chances continue at 30-40% into the overnight as lows drop back to the mid-to-upper 60s. Confidence: Medium

The weather stays unsettled as we move into Wednesday. We’re still dealing with the potential for some showers and storms to pop up, though the best chances may stay south and west of the immediate area. Even if we manage to stay on the drier side, mostly cloudy skies and an onshore flow, thanks to high pressure off the Northeast coast, limit highs to the 70s. Confidence: Low-Medium
