FORECAST IN DETAIL

Meteorology 101: which way is the wind blowing? Winds from the east on Thursday into early Friday blanketed the D.C. area in low clouds and cool air. Today, winds from the north dry us out and clear the skies, making for a spectacular start to the weekend with sun and comfortable warmth! As high pressure settles overhead going into Sunday, and then shifts east and south to start the work week, think of temperatures tomorrow through Tuesday like a staircase – they’re headed up and up and up!

Today (Saturday): High five for a spectacular day! After our taste of sun yesterday afternoon, we see plenty more where that came from today with mostly sunny skies, low humidity, and a refreshing breeze from the north around 10 mph. Even better that it lands on a Saturday to enjoy it. Highs range in the upper 70s to near 80. I’m ordering everyone to spend some time outside – with sunscreen of course! Confidence: High

Tonight: Evening temperatures cool through the 70s into the 60s, then down to overnight lows mainly in the 50s, maybe holding up near 60 downtown and close to the Bay. Skies should be mostly clear for my stargazers out there. Radiational cooling from the clear skies and calm winds may contribute to some valley fog for folks in higher spots in the north and west suburbs. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Sunday): It’s close to a carbon copy, but tomorrow brings a few subtle differences from today. Another wind shift to more from the southeast at 5-10 mph, plus the potential for some spotty clouds, may keep temperatures a few ticks cooler. Overall, though, we’re still partly to mostly sunny with highs at least to the mid-70s, and possibly near 80 in some spots. Rain chances remain nil, so another great day to enjoy the outdoors! Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Another beautiful evening to close out the weekend, perfect for a backyard BBQ or dinner out on the town. Overnight lows fall to the mid-50s to near 60, with mostly clear skies and light winds out of the southeast. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

As high pressure edges offshore Monday, the wind shifts yet again to more from the south and southwest. That increases the heat and eventually the humidity, too, as highs head for the mid-80s under mostly to partly sunny skies. Perhaps just enough heat and humidity for an isolated afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm mainly west of town. Monday night stays mild, with overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 60s. Confidence: Medium

We reach the top of the temperature staircase on Tuesday, with highs probably up near 90. We’re talking moderate to high humidity as well, with dew points well into the 60s, which means the afternoon heat index could top out in the low-to-mid 90s. Afternoon or evening storms (40-50% chance) could offer some heat relief, though Tuesday night lows near 70 are still quite warm. Confidence: Low-Medium
