Lucky strike: Lightning bolt captured in photo from airplane

Lightning strikes outside Denver, Colorado on Thursday. (Gina Hyams)

If you ask some of weather’s best photographers, they’ll probably tell you that lightning is one of the most difficult things to capture on film. You often need to utilize expensive equipment, long shutter times, and a lot of patience.

But Gina Hyams got a lucky shot on Thursday when she saw a storm outside her plane window on her Southwest flight to Denver. The plane was circling the Denver airport because of storms. She pulled out her iPhone and threw it into burst mode, and caught this unbelievable cloud-to-ground lightning strike that is tearing up social media. By her own account, she definitely #gotlucky.

Kudos to Gina. It’s hard enough to snap a picture of lightning on your phone, let alone from an airplane!
