A tornado touched down just seven miles north of downtown Boston this morning, as a sharp cold front approached eastern New England.  The twister raked the northern suburb of Revere, mowing down trees and damaging buildings.

No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service office serving the Boston area confirmed the tornado touched down and will issue a more detailed assessment on its, path, size and intensity later today.

Photos from the scene show streets littered with tree limbs and debris (see a collection of multimedia at the bottom of this post).

A WeatherBug station in the vicinity of Revere clocked a wind gust to 68 mph.

A tornado warning was issued for the storm at 9:44 a.m. which was racing to the northeast at 55 mph.

The complex of thunderstorms also generated torrential rains, with multiple reports of flash flooding in eastern Massachusetts - focused north and west of Boston.

While not with the frequency of the Great Plains or Deep South, tornadoes can and do occur in New England and Massachusetts.  Over 150 tornadoes were confirmed in Massachusetts between 1951 and 2013, according to the Tornado History Project.

However, the tornado in Revere is the first on record to occur in Suffolk County, Mass., according to the National Weather Service.
