FORECAST IN DETAIL

Now that it’s September, the hot and humid summer that wasn’t has arrived. Over the next 6 days, high temperatures flirt with and sometimes surpass 90. We’ll also have a few thunderstorm chances: today, Tuesday night and Saturday, when a cold front should send the heat away.

Today (Monday): Variably cloudy and humid (dew points near 70) for much of today. Areas where the sun outdoes the clouds should see highs into the low 90s. Areas where cloud cover is more prevalent probably are capped in the mid-to-upper 80s. There’s a 10-20 percent chance of a shower/storm in the morning, increasing to 30 percent in the afternoon. Winds are west around 5-10 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: There’s a small (20 percent) chance of evening storms, but most folks stay dry for barbecues. Temperatures slowly fall back through the 80s with overnight lows from the upper 60s in our cooler suburbs to the low-to-mid 70s downtown. Light winds. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is probably the hottest day of the week with a good deal of sunshine and steamy winds from the southwest (5 to 10 mph). Highs reach the mid-90s and feel close to 100 factoring in the humidity. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: As a weak cold front drifts through the region, a few evening storms could fire with the best chance in our western areas (40 percent) and the lowest chances east of I-95 (20 percent). Otherwise, it’s partly cloudy and mild, with lows in the mid-to-upper 60s in our cooler suburbs to low 70s downtown. Light winds. Confidence: Medium-High

A LOOK AHEAD

High pressure rules Wednesday through Friday with lots of sunshine and very warm to hot temperatures. Highs Wednesday are 85-90, with upper 80s to low 90s Thursday and Friday. Moderate humidity Wednesday gradually ticks up with muggy conditions by Friday when an isolated storm is possible. Overnight lows Wednesday night are in the 60s to near 70, warming to 68-75 by Friday night. Confidence: Medium-High

Saturday is probably on the hot side, with highs 90-95 (under partly sunny skies) before an incoming front brings the chance of late afternoon and evening storms. Partial clearing Saturday night with lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

A slight chance of lingering showers/storms on Sunday but there’s potential for this to be a very nice day. Not as hot and humid, with highs in the 80s. Confidence: Low-Medium
