Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green to suit up for 'Team Staal'

Mike Green told Alex Ovechkin he would petition the other powers that be for Team Staal -- Eric Staal and fellow alternate captain Ryan Kesler -- to select Ovechkin early in the NHL All-Star fantasy draft. So even after he wasn't the first overall pick of the draft, Ovechkin didn't worry.

"I wasn't sweating; it's just fun," Ovechkin said. "I knew if they went No. 1 they were going to pick Cam [Ward], probably. It's going to be fun, you know. We made some good selections."

For Green's part, there wasn't too much extra coaxing needed to get the two-time Hart Trophy winner on his team.

"I told him I would lobby for him. I didn't know exactly how it was going to work out, but I didn't have to push too hard," said Green, who added that his team was picked not only for the game but the skills competition as well. Green also suggested that Team Staal pick up Zdeno Chara specifically to help out Saturday night in the hardest-shot competition.

As one might have imagined, Team Staal has strong Carolina ties with the addition of Cam Ward and rookie Jeff Skinner. Team Lidstrom, featuring alternate captains Martin St. Louis of the Lightning and Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks, picked up Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos and several members of the 2010 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago squad in Duncan Keith, Jonothan Toews and Dustin Byfuglien.

Regardless of which team might come out on top in the skills competition or game this weekend, the players dubbed the first all-star fantasy draft a success in adding a new wrinkle to the festivities.

Ovechkin, who is accustomed to attending many of the NHL's premier events, said he would enjoy possibly being a captain and getting to select his own team if the league would conduct an all-star draft again.

"It was not long, like an hour, and just to be part of this process was pretty cool," Ovechkin said. "I think it's unbelievable."

This is Green's first all-star appearance and while he has nothing to compare the experience to, he said he enjoyed the added spectacle.

"I think it went well. I guess we'll see how the text messages go from the friends, what they thought," Green said. "I thought on stage it went well, it ran smoothly and hopefully people liked it....This is cool. It is special. I've been to drafts and other events but this is pretty special and I'm very honored to be here."
