Alex Ovechkin, Jay Beagle not on the ice for Capitals’ practice

Capitals practice is underway at KCI without the presence of captain Alex Ovechkin, who is taking a maintenance day according to a team spokesman.

Ovechkin and Jay Beagle, who has missed five days of practice since being knocked out in a fight by Pittsburgh’s Arron Asham on Oct. 13, are the only players who haven’t hit the ice Wednesday morning. Ovechkin played a season-low 17 minutes and 35 seconds against the Panthers on Tuesday night but finished with 22 shifts, which is about a normal ballpark for the star left wing.

Goaltender Michal Neuvirth, who was scratched for a third consecutive game Tuesday with a bruised right foot, skated alone for a half hour befor the rest of the team practiced but went to the dressing room when formal drills began.

— Dany Sabourin is still in Washington and is the second goaltender for practice this morning.

— In Ovechkin’s absence, Matt Hendricks is wearing a red jersey and skating with Nicklas Backstrom and Troy Brouwer on the top line.
