Alex Ovechkin out against Senators

As the Washington Capitals look to get back on track after one of the more demoralizing defeats of the season, they will be without Alex Ovechkin. The left wing will miss Wednesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators with a lower-body injury.

Ovechkin’s absence detracts from a lineup already without No. 1 center Nicklas Backstrom, who remains sidelined with a concussion. But as the Capitals prepared to face Ottawa, which has won three straight heading into the matchup, players prepared to step up without Ovechkin on the ice.

“When he’s out, I don’t think it should be on one person [who steps up]. I think it should be everybody,” Karl Alzner said. “We should get a goal from the fourth line, we should get a goal from the D and guys that score a little more often, it’d be nice to get one from them.”

With Ovechkin out of the lineup, freshly recalled forward Keith Aucoin will likely get a sweater and play on the fourth line. Check back closer to puck drop for the full lineup the Capitals show during warmups.

Coach Dale Hunter said after the morning skate that Ovechkin was coping with a lower-body injury. Ovechkin attempted to take part in the session at Scotiabank Place on Wednesday morning but went off the ice after roughly eight minutes. While he was on the ice, Ovechkin tried to gain speed through the neutral zone during a drill but had to pull up and never appeared to be fully at ease.

It’s believed Ovechkin suffered the injury in Monday’s 5-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
