Alex Ovechkin returns to Moscow after death of his uncle, not expected to miss Capitals’ opener

Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is flying home to be with his family in Moscow after the death of his uncle. Below is a news release from the team:

Alex Ovechkin will be returning to Moscow to attend to his family after the death of a close relative in Moscow, Russia.  Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Alex and his family.  We sincerely ask that you respect his privacy at this time.

A team spokesman said the Capitals are hopeful Ovechkin will be able to return for Saturday’s season opener against the Hurricanes at Verizon Center.
