Alex Ovechkin skates after missing Wednesday’s game

Alex Ovechkin could play Friday night. (Jonathan Newton - WASHINGTON POST)
Injured Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is on the ice for Friday’s morning skate at KCI after missing Wednesday’s game in Ottawa and Thursday’s team practice because of a lower-body injury.

We probably won’t know his status for tonight’s game against the Canadiens until Coach Dale Hunter addresses reporters. But it’s likely a good sign that Ovechkin is able to participate fully.

Before the morning skate began, Ovechkin took to the ice wearing only shorts and hockey gloves and carrying a stick. After five minutes of hard stops, cuts and explosive blasts through the neutral zone, Ovechkin returned to the dressing room and put on his equipment.

Ovechkin left the ice after about 15 minutes. I asked if him he planned to play Friday night and he said only, “We'll see.” He is expected to speak to reporters later.

Ovechkin is the only forward wearing a red jersey at the moment. Alexander Semin, Brooks Laich and Dennis Wideman were not at the optional skate.

Stay tuned.
