Boudreau: 'No sense in taking any chances' with injuries in preseason

Coach Bruce Boudreau this morning provided updates regarding the status of forward Tomas Fleischmann and defenseman Mike Green , both late scratches before last night's preseason game against Boston at Verizon Center, saying they could have played but were held out for precautionary reasons.

Green skated at KCI earlier today, but Fleischmann did not take part in the 40-minute session before the team went into meetings and then departed for Boston, where the Capitals play tonight.

As for goalie Semyon Varlamov , Boudreau declined to reveal the specific nature of the injury.

"He's got a little something, and it's nothing major or serious," Boudreau said of Varlamov. "You read around how many injuries are taking place in training camp, and we still got 31 guys. There's just no sense in taking any chances. Anybody that has a little tweak, a little pain, a little ouch, we're just giving them maintenance days off."

Goalies Dany Sabourin and Braden Holtby , whom the Caps recalled from Hershey this morning, got in some work in advance of tonight's game. Sabourin is scheduled to start, with Holtby also expected to receive playing time.

In an effort to provide rest for selected players, Boudreau has been experimenting with different line combinations during the preseason, and that will continue tonight at TD Garden. Among the pairings Boudreau said he would try out include Marcus Johansson , normally a center, at left wing with Swedish countryman Nicklas Backstrom at center.

Boudreau also will move Boyd Gordon back to center for tonight's game and play David Steckel on the wing, giving Gordon needed opportunities to take faceoffs. In last night's 3-2 victory over the Bruins, Steckel played center, with Gordon on the wing.

"The major concern, when you've got six centers or seven centers still left in camp doing well, is to make sure you give every one of them a chance to play at their natural position," Boudreau said.

Katie is headed to Boston and will have updates before faceoff on the line combinations.
