Coach Bruce Boudreau said the reason the Capitals downgraded Dennis Wideman’s status to week-to-week was because the defenseman definitely will not play either Thursday against Columbus or Saturday against Buffalo.
Asked for an estimation on whether Wideman would be able to return to the lineup before the end of the reglar season, Boudreau said, “I couldn’t tell you that right now. I wish I was a doctor, but right now, I don’t know.”
Wideman fell in the second period of Tuesday’s game against Carolina and was hit at the same time by the Hurricanes’ Tuomo Ruutu and suffered an apparent lower-body injury. The 28-year-old defenseman limped off under his own power, favoring his right leg and foot. It’s unclear if Wideman, who hasn’t been available to reporters since the injury, simply lost an edge or caught his skate in a rut in the ice.
With Wideman out along with Mike Green (concussion) and Tom Poti (groin), Tyler Sloan will be back in the Capitals’ lineup.
